  • Swedish Flower Hens, or Blommehöns, are a visually stunning and practical landrace breed originating from southern Sweden. Known for their unique “flowered” plumage—feathers tipped in white or black—these chickens are true individuals. No two birds have the same pattern, making them a colorful and eye-catching addition to any flock.

This breed is prized for its hardiness, strong egg production, and natural camouflage, which makes them excellent foragers in a free-range setting. While not the cuddliest breed, Swedish Flower Hens are confident, self-assured, and slightly higher-ranking in the pecking order. They’re calm and observant, not flighty or nervous, and they coexist well in mixed flocks.

At Sugar Feather Farm, we raise our Swedish Flower Hens with our custom designed non-GMO feed, herbal health support, and plenty of space and love to forage and thrive. These starter pullets and cockerels are between 9-10 weeks old and are shipped healthy and strong, ready to integrate into your farm or homestead.

    “What is a Landrace Fowl?”

    • Cold Hardy & Naturally Resilient

    • Slightly Higher in the Flock Hierarchy – Not Bullied Easily

    • Excellent Egg Layers (Large, Cream-Colored Eggs)

    • Gorgeous Speckled Plumage – No Two Alike

    • Independent but Calm – Great for Mixed Flocks

    • Adaptable to Free-Range or Coop Living

  • Swedish Flower Hens are the largest native chicken breed in Sweden, developed naturally over generations in the rural villages of Eslöv, Tofta, and Skåne. As a landrace, they were not selectively bred for appearance or commercial production. Instead, they evolved for survival—resistant to cold, alert to predators, and self-sufficient.

By the late 20th century, the breed had almost disappeared. Fortunately, small flocks were rediscovered, and preservation efforts began. These remnant birds became the foundation for today’s Swedish Flower Hens, now prized by small-scale farmers, breeders, and heritage breed enthusiasts around the world.

  • At Sugar Feather Farm, we prioritize long-term health through proper nutrition at every stage of growth. Here’s our recommended feeding plan for Swedish Flower Hens:

    • Weeks 0–6: Start with our Sugar Feather Farm Chick Starter Feed, formulated for strong bones, healthy immune development, and feather growth during these critical first weeks.

    • 6 Weeks to Maturity: Transition to our Chicken Grower Feed to support steady development and prepare pullets for laying.

    • At Point of Lay: When your pullets begin producing eggs, switch to our Sugar Feather Farm Adult Feed for optimal nutrition and consistent egg production.

    Daily Wellness Tip:
Add Oil of Oregano to their water daily as a natural supplement. It promotes healthy digestion, supports immunity, and contributes to overall vitality—especially helpful for landrace and heritage breeds.

All of our feed formulas are non-GMO and specially designed to support natural, holistic chicken health at every life stage.
